Premature ejaculation, also called premature ejaculation, is a common sexual dysfunction in men. Various studies show that premature ejaculation occurs sporadically in just over 40 percent of men between the ages of 18 and 74, while about 10 percent experience premature ejaculation all the time. The majority of young men in their teens experience premature ejaculation.
Premature ejaculation often causes great suffering, both for the person who has the problem, but also in relationships. Many with premature ejaculation feel a strong fear of being intimate with a partner. The fear of failure is great.
Premature ejaculation is divided into different forms
- Lifelong where the problem has existed since the person became sexually active, where possible causes are neurological, psychological or a lack of psychosexual skills
- Acquired where the problem has debuted after a period of relatively normal function and where possible causes can be physical illness, injuries, medical side effects, psychological stress or strain in the relationship. Men with acquired premature ejaculation can experience well-functioning masturbation in solitude, but may, due to anxiety and performance demands, have problems with premature ejaculation with a partner. Feelings of shame linked to sexual activity can also cause problems with premature ejaculation.
Furthermore, premature ejaculation is divided into forms such as
- Generalized , which means that the problem is not limited to a certain type of stimulation, certain partners or certain situations, but the problem looks largely the same on every occasion.
- Situational is more situational where it may have worked better with certain partners or in certain situations. It may be that for some partners, premature ejaculation is not a problem as they want to be satisfied in a way other than through penetration, while other partners see penetration itself as the main element and where premature ejaculation then becomes a disappointment
Premature ejaculation is also divided into the severity levels Mild, Moderate and Severe, which is governed by the time of penetration.
The cause of premature ejaculation is largely unknown. It is not entirely clear whether the lifelong and acquired forms have the same or different underlying factors. They may be due to psychological factors and/or relational factors, but they can also be caused by medical factors such as infections or inflammation of the prostate gland. There may also be genetic differences between individuals that could partly explain premature ejaculation. Medications and drugs such as MDMA can also cause problems with premature ejaculation.
For those who have problems with premature ejaculation, it is not uncommon to also have erection problems.
